Motorola QC Diagnostic Driver installation on Windows 7 64-bit

First, you'll need the Motorola Device Manager . The driver files will probably get installed to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Motorola Shared\Mobile Drivers\Drivers You'll need to run Notepad or your favorite text editor as Administrator, and edit the motport.inf file.  Add the following lines underneath both the [Motorola] and [Motorola.NTamd64] sections.  Note, the PID_XXXX code in the strings below may vary depending on the device you're trying to connect.  This particular one is for a first generation Motorola Moto G phone. %USBMOTQCDIAGPORT% = USBMOTPORT, USB\VID_22B8&PID_2E91&MI_00 %USBMOTQCDIAGPORT% = USBMOTPORT, USB\VID_22B8&PID_2E29&MI_00 Sources: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53094886&postcount=398 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55014382&postcount=686

Kill-a-Watt measurements of Denon AVR-X2000 A/V receiver

I was curious to see the energy draw from my Denon receiver.  I have a Kill-a-Watt unit and am always interested in real world measurements.  I was surprised at the idle powered-on usage, so I decided to post them up here in case anyone else is interested.  This is on standard U.S. 110v/120v power (measures 122v at the wall). Unit is off, but plugged in (red power light):  2 W Unit is powered on (green power light), no activity or signal:  53 W Playing a rock MP3 over Airplay - stereo - into two Energy RC-10 bookshelf speakers (88-91 dB, 8 ohms) @ m. vol 56.0 = 58-59 W @ m. vol 63.0 = 65-68 W @ m. vol 70.0 = 72-80 W I don't have my 5.1 setup yet but will take more measurements when I can.

Compiling Apache HTTP server as 32-bit on Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

I had a need to re-compile Apache as 32-bit with SSL support.  This is on a MacBook Pro with the Intel Core i7 processor. Here are the configure params I ended up using to make this work.  ./configure CFLAGS="-arch i386" CXXFLAGS="-arch i386" --prefix=/etc /apache2 --enable-ssl --enable-so

Manual duplex (two-sided) printing on a Brother laser printer

I have a Brother HL-2280DW black & white laser printer.  I try to save paper by printing duplex when I can.  But sometimes the pages are on separate PDFs or image files.  I know I can use some free software like pdfsam  but when I just need to print it out, I don't care to have a merged PDF. The Brother support web site drove me nuts when I tried to find the information.  The short and easy method: 1) print your first page 2) take the printed page out, open the paper tray 3) put the in paper in with the printed side face DOWN [edit: this reversed on me later, what gives?  needed to be face UP - please add a comment if you know why it changes], with the top of the printed content toward the rear of the tray. 4) print your second page.  You should now have a perfect two-sided page with the words showing from the top down on both sides.

BMC Remedy 7.6 is very slow

I'm forced to use BMC Remedy at work.  It was frustratingly slow in any browser I tried - IE, Chrome, and Firefox.  Getting it to let me click into different fields, or open drop-downs, everything was slow.  I believe it has to do with the version of Flash I had installed, which is a very recent version for security's sake. One day, I happened to try this in the incognito mode in Chrome (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome on Windows).  This made things considerably faster!  There must be an issue with the way the browser or Flash was caching Remedy's objects.  Definitely worth a try if you're running into the same issue.

RedemptionRunner.exe found running in my Taskmgr

I had a bit of a freak-out when seeing this show up in my Taskmgr one day, when Windows was churning.  If it turned out to be some kind of coupon printer or spyware, I would have been upset at myself for not knowing it was there. Turns out it is part of the Verizon Virtual Communications Express software.  It is an odd name for an executable, but who knows what they're thinking when they name these things. Directory of C:\Program Files (x86)\Verizon\Virtual Communications Express\RedemptionRunner32 03/31/2014 11:23 AM 347,648 RedemptionRunner.exe 1 File(s) 347,648 bytes Directory of C:\Program Files (x86)\Verizon\Virtual Communications Express\RedemptionRunner64 03/31/2014 11:23 AM 460,288 RedemptionRunner.exe 1 File(s) 460,288 bytes Update : In 2018, we had to upgrade to a newer version of Virtual Communications Express. The executable names have been renamed to something a bit more straightforward.
